Communicators on the Runway

Whoever thought that producing a glamorous fashion show is only meant for FA (fine arts) students clearly hasn't witnessed Le Vogue, a parade of beauty and glamour which is annually presented in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Sta. Mesa, Manila.

Last March 2, third year students amazed the whole PUP community as models from different sections and departments in the  College of Communication walked in the runway carrying their charming and alluring beauties. Le Vogue is a fashion show celebrated every year as partial requirement of masscom scholars in their subject Intercultural and International Communication.

The event, which took place at the PUP Freedom Park, showcased the creativity and resourcefulness of the junior students who designed the costumes that were presented in the runway. Each section has a designated country that they will project to imitate, from the traditional costumes to modern clothing. Costumes should be handmade and must be composed of scraps and other recycled materials.

As the show opened at 7pm, the audiences started to shout the names of their bets and scream for the models they want. Everyone was fascinated by the presentation prepared by the students. Some geared up with fire balls while others do role-playing. The loudest cheer was heard when models representing the country of Brazil ramped in the stage with their swimwear. Showing off their sexy and smooth skin, models only wore two-piece bikinis suited with maong micro mini shorts which aroused the viewers.

The intensity of the event was even more felt backstage. Models, together with their personal assistants, anxiously wear their next costume as one by one, they go up on the stage. Not only students felt the uneasiness because teachers and faculty members also walked in the runway wearing the best costume the students have customized.

Indeed, Le Vogue once again a victory; a success not only for the organizers but also for the students who joined in the fashion show. Winners of the said event will be announced in the Sikat Awards Night happening on March 26.

Le Vogue isn't just a mere fashion show but a contest as well which encourages the students unleash their creativity, unity and confidence.

The Country's Problem Part III: Unemployment rate, rising; Economy, falling

Unemployment has always been a problem in the Philippines. But it has never been a serious issue as it is right now as more and more Filipinos struggle to lose their jobs due to the lower economic growth.

According to pundits, the government is set to cut anew its economic growth target for this year, which will definitely cause more Filipinos out of their jobs.

"It's not a single case of higher growth and higher employment. Unemployment will worsen definitely because of the lower economic growth," Benjamin Diokno, an economics professor, told the Manila Times.

He said that unemployment rate will still increase eight percent to 8.5 percent in April.

NEDA Director, Dennis Arroyo said yesterday that economy is not generating enough jobs, that is why the government has again to trim the country's growth target to between 3.1 percent from the current range of 3.7 percent to 4.4 percent.

At present, 50, 380 Filipinos in the country have been laid off, while 6,485 overseas workers have been displaced. In the tourism sector alone, slowing growth has dampened job-generation in the industry, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) said.

According to Romulo Virola, NSCB Secretary General, growth in the industry began slowing the second half of last year, thus failing to sustain the momentum built up since the third quarter of 2006.

Employment industry also dropped to 1.5 percent last year from 3.7 percent last in 2007, slower than the 2.6 percent growth of overall employment.

The rising figures of unemployment rate in the country are alarming and there will be a time that even Filipinos in secured position has to surrender their post. The government has to do something to resolve the problem that has been haunting the country for over the years.

Blog Interview: Vince Golangco, the Man Behind WhenInManila.com

Vince Golangco, a graduate of San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, a radio DJ at Mellow 94.7, is the man behind WhenInManila.com. Vince is also a freelance columnist and he published his articles in different printing press such as The Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Philippine Star, Playboy Magazine and many more. He is also the organizer of Blogapalooza, the meeting place of bloggers and businessmen.

Start of Blogging Career

“I just like telling stories.”

When Vince came home to Philippines, he wanted to show his friends in San Diego what Philippines look like, so he started blogging and became a storyteller. However, that did not stop him to publish beautiful tales about Philippines just to tell it to his friends, but also, to let the world see more about our country.

Vince had many blogs at first, however, he made When in Manila his priority. The name “When in Manila” comes from the saying “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”, thus, the blog shows what should be done when in Philippines.

The Perks of Being a Blogger

“You get invited by the coolest events and you get to meet the coolest people.”

Just a couple of days before the interview with Vince, he was invited in the Malacanang Palace for an exclusive screening of a Filipino-made National Geographic documentary called “Inside Malacanang”. Without a doubt, President Noynoy Aquino was among the viewers and with so much luck, he manage to shake his hand and took some photos with him!

On New Year, the Mellow DJ was celebrating the holiday with the sexy and beautiful model-actress Solenn Heusaff. It’s no ordinary event as he was paid to celebrate with Solenn so that he can write about partying with her!

For his income, Vince is paid 6-7,000 just for a tweet and 10,000-25,000 for a blog post since many people views his blog. For the ad space on his blog, Vince charges $50 a week for a 125x125 spot.

Though there is money in blogging, he believed that the best part of being a blogger is not all about the cash you’re getting, but it is about meeting many people and sharing your stories with them.

Blogapalooza’s Beginning

“Blogapalooza was about inviting good bloggers who can help a business out.”

Due to WheninManila.com’s popularity, many people inquired him about how to get them promoted on his site, how they can meet new bloggers and tips on what to do on their online social media. And with this Vince and his friends decided to create an event that will make bloggers and businesses meet in one place.

He said that small businesses can’t afford to throw a blogger event due to many expenses (food, venue, lighting system, etc.) and what’s more they don’t know who the bloggers are, they don’t know who to invite. And since Vince know a lot of good bloggers, he started the event.

The benefits of joining Blogapalooza for businessmen are that their products get promoted, and for the bloggers, they had the chance to discover and try cool things. Vince called this as B2B or Business to Blogger networking event.

Regarding the next Blogapalooza, he said that he still don’t know when to organize it as he have a busy schedule with him. But if you wanted to join and get updated for the next event, just go to Blogapalooza page (http://blogapalooza.wheninmanila.com/).

The Key to Success

“You have to write every day. It’s really a commitment.”

Vince said that he read about search engine optimization (SEO), a powerful tool that improves the visibility, or rather, the popularity of your site. He exampled two people having the same blog that talks about gadgets. One of them had good SEO. So, when people search about gadgets, that person’s blog who had good SEO, will be at the first page of Google search while the other will be somewhere in the next pages. Meaning, that blog will get more hits rather than the other one since no one goes to Page 2 in Google.

Links and keywords are very important for SEO. If a blog have lots of links, Google will see that blog as important and will rank it higher. In the case of keywords, a blog should repeat a keyword in an article 3 percent of the time. It also had to be in your title too.

Vince added that content is a key, so one must have a lot of contents. Also, the way one should write must contain SEO-friendly keywords, so that Google will link your blog first since you have what they are looking for.

For earning money, Vince said that there are a lot of ways such as Google Adsense, InfoLinks, Nuffnang, etc. Vince’s favorite is Nuffnang. Compared to Google Ads which has a pay-per-click function by clicking ads, Nuffnang has the pay-per-view function whenever someone sees your blog. To sum up, you just have to be creative.

In terms of criticizing, Vince believed that when they have a bad review, they reserve the right not to write about it. He added that if one is going to review, at least go back the second time and try again.
Vince recommended that a blogger should write about positive things and try not to focus on negative things.

Advice from the Expert

“If it’s not you’re passionate about, don’t write about it.”

Vince encouraged bloggers to write everyday even if it is a short one, as long as you love what you are
writing.

Celebrity Match-Up 2012 Part 1

Celebrities are always the talk-of-the-town. From their soap operas, acting gigs, singing gigs or TV shows to their personal life and love life. People always gives attention to them. with that comparing one person to another  is inevitable. So now i present to you people that caught my eyes and my personal comparisons.

Women of the Hour - Miriam Defensor-Santiago and Anabelle Rama

Both known for having a tough demeanor, Senator and Impeachment Trial Judge Mirriam Defensor-Santiago and Talent Manager Annabelle Rama are now on fire for all the legal cases that are surrounding them. Senator Santiago is now grilling the Prosecutors of the Corona Impeachment and is having memorable fights to the likes of Private Prosecutor Aguirre and prosecution head Rep. Niel Tupaz. Rama, on the other hand is put in the limelight by the libel suite and other cases filed by former friend and talents Nadia Montenegro and daughters.

Most Controversial Magazine Covers-Bela Padilla, KC Concepcion, Charice and Jinky Pacquiao

2012 had just begun but magazine covers for the first three months had proven to be too controversial. KC Concepcion's cover of Rouge puts off to many issues and assumptions for posing for the first time in one piece and holding a cut-off head of a guy, all after her break-up with actor Piolo Pascual. Jinky Pacquiao and Charice's cover on the other hand was claimed to be too photoshopped and doesn't look like any of their normal selves anymore. Bela Padilla's upcoming cover in FHM leaked on the net opens up about racism.

Primetime Queens-Marian Rivera, Angel Locsin, Anne Curtis and Rhian Ramos

Until now, war on whom the Primetime Queen is, is still a question. People online and on streets still asks themselves on who's worthy for the title. Among all the rising stars, outstanding performances from Angel Locsin(Only You, Lobo and Immortal), Anne Curtis(Maging Sino Ka Man, Kampanerang Kuba), Rhian Ramos(Stairway to Heaven, LaLola) and Marian Rivera(Darna, Amaya and Marimar) makes them front runner for the title.

Hollywood

Shocking Break-ups : Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore and Katy Perry and Russel Brand

It was a shock both for fans and close friends when famous couples Katy Perry and Russel Brand and Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher called it off. Katy Perry and Russel Brand was rumored to have misunderstanding about Katy's religion on which Russel often makes jabs about and Katy Perry's famous Partying-all-night. On the other hand, Demi and Ashton made a split because of Ashton's infidelity.

Mirror,Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman

Snow White Stories is sure now a hit, as 2012 produces two stories about this infamous fairy tale. Mirror, Mirror, a comic adaptation for Snow White casts Julia Roberts as the witty and evil Queen and Lily Collins as the Snow White. It is a story where the evil queen(Roberts) steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright. Snow White and the huntsman on the other hand, is a gothic interpretation of Snow White that casts Kirsten Stewart as Snow White, Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman and Charlize Teron as the evil Queen. It's story revolves around the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen.

There you have it folks, I'm sure you agree with all the comparisons that has been written above. More comparison would be made as the year continues, so you better hold on tight and wait for the new batch.

Covers Uncover

Nowadays, many celebrities pose for certain magazines. Many believed that posing for a magazine makes them popular and controversial. True enough, lots of celebrities today become contentious just because of posing in a magazine.

Controversial magazine covers have always been an issue in America. But here in the Philippines where people are more sensitive, editors should be reminded of what to put and what to do with design, lay-out and editorial. We, at Everybody’s Journal, gathered several magazine covers that have been controversial not only in today’s time but also throughout the years.

Maybe some controversial covers have worked and sold more magazines, or won awards for the editors who made the decision to go to press with them, others were embarrassments that the publication had to either apologize for, or fire an editor over. So before that happens, you need to read this article to get a clear idea on how you would design your own magazine cover.

TIME MAGAZINE (1966)
First off, this cover was really offensive. No celebrity may have posed for this cover but the lines itself are somehow unpleasant, especially for the believers. But anyway, the related article concerned the “death of god movement” that had sprung up in the 1960′s. The cover and article infuriated readers.

ROLLING STONE (1993)
Here's another controversial and hot issue published by Rolling Stone magazine. Janet Jackson poses with his breast cupped by anonymous hands from behind. Pretty gross but that's how liberated Americans are. As a matter of fact, this cover became the greatest music images in the nineties.

ROLLING STONE (2006)
Kanye West posed as Jesus with crown of thorns. The magazine's article on talks about the unpredictable and contradicting side of the rapper and his music. This might be insulting for the faithful followers of Christ, but take note this became a sold-out issue in the year it was published.

THE NEW YORKER (2008)
This cover made by famous New Yorker cartoonist Barry Blitt gathered a lot of critics by both Mccain and Obama camps during the 2008 US election. The piece merely wants to spoof the alleged lob at the couple by their detractors, however, its inopportune appearance during a campaign didn’t have Obama’s supporters laughing as hard as the magazine intended.

NEW HUMANIST MAGAZINE (2011)
Ricky Gervais, an atheist that posed like crucified Jesus. Well, this one definitely raised the eyebrows sensitive Christian groups.

PREVIEW AND MEGA MAGAZINE (2012)
Another controversial magazine cover from the Philippines involved international singing sensation Charice Pempengco and world-renowned boxer Manny Pacquaio's wife, Jinky Pacquiao. This covers both became a hot issue because of the accusation of photo editing. Meanwhile, both publications admitted that the photos are edited though not totally.

ROGUE MAGAZINE (2012)

Not only in America has that controversial magazines existed, these can also be found here in the Philippines. After KC Conception's heart-pounding break-up with Piolo Pascual, Sharon Cuneta's daughter decided to pose for a sexy pictorial in Rogue magazine. This sexy yet artistic cover resulted to rumors that she's still bitter with that break-up and was becoming a little rebel. While many of her fans were surprised by this "rebellious act", several men thought that it was time for KC to unveil her sexy and yummy body.

FHM MAGAZINE (2012)
Still in the Philippines. Bela Padilla, forget her dream of becoming a finalist for Bb. Pilipinas as she posed for a well-known men's magazine. With the tagline, "Stepping out of the Shadows", this cover cached the attention of the press not only here but also abroad. The cover is accused as racism because of the black women surrounding Bela, the only white woman. Because of these allegations, FHM publication was forced to change the cover of the March Edition magazine which  happen to be their anniversary edition.  This magazine cover definitely literally define the Don't-Judge-A-Book-By-I'ts-Cover as both the publication and Bela said that racism was not the intention of the cover. However, they immediately apologize to the public.

Now that you know the most controversial magazine covers for Everybody's Journal, you can also share us the covers you think should be included in our list.

The Country's Problem (Part II) : Oil Price Hike

The government should address the country’s problem about oil prices before it totally ruin the economy.

Aside from Electricity prices, another thing that has been steadily increasing is the oil price.  From the start of 2012, at least five oil price hikes have been implemented in the country. It was all because oil prices have also increased in the world market due to the chaos happening in the Middle East and the West. However, the threatening prices of gas and diesel have brought torment to the public.

Of course, the primary affected whenever there will be an oil price hikes were the motorists and commuters but all of us were really affected by it. How? Simple, all of us people living; breathing and moving were affected by oil price because we all go to different places. We can’t just walk, we have to ride. Aside from that, when prices of gasoline increase, definitely prices of other products will also rise. This was because products of different cities were transferred and delivered to the markets. Transportation is also included in the cost.

In the Philippines, several transport groups have condemned the oil price hikes. In an interview, Pasang Masda blames the government for not doing anything and for being powerless regarding this problem.  They said that PUV drivers were caught in the middle of the situation because commuters don’t want them to impose an increase in fare and yet, oil prices have been increasing. Department of Energy on the other hand defended their side. "Napakahirap for us, kami nasisisi, para kaming PAGASA, sana huwag magalit kung ang bad news ay based on facts....we are not spokesmen ng oil companies, mas kinakatigan namin kapakanan ng consumers."

According to a study, high oil prices could endanger the shaky recovery in advanced economies and small oil-importing countries. Moreover, the manner in which oil prices affect emerging and developing economies has received surprisingly little attention compared with the large body of evidence for advanced economies. The big picture here was that, import bills go up when oil price rises just as said earlier, thus making the problem a bigger one.
So before, oil prices triple its digits, the government should be alarmed with the looming price of oil prices.
